Quiz Monday and Tuesday on the scientific method and qualitative/quantitative observations
Today we reviewed the scientific method during our warm up and then we went over the answer to our homework, the Bart Simpson handout. Our quiz Monday and Tuesday will cover Scientific Method and Qualitative and Quantitative observations. These notes are on pages 6 and 8 in our notebooks. Next we introduced Chemistry and the atom. We started with a intro handout on google docs. Many of you completed it in class, but some of you still need to complete it. Make sure you have it "turned in" by September 15th. You will need the brainpop username and password to complete the assignment. Username: Alexmid Password: brainpop Finally we completed our notes on the introduction to the atom on page 11 in our notebooks. The powerpoint from today can be found here. Finally here are the codes for google classrooms if you were absent today. 1st block (A)– ktzil5e 3rd block (A)– ydz3tl 4th block(A) – 3mg391e 1st block (B) – z7o8w8q 3rd block (B) – ry7x98l 4th block (B) – bmu71uo Curiculum night is tonight. A letter went home with your children today. Here is the letter.
We started the day with a review of our crystals from last class. The students brainstormed all sorts of possible uses for these crystals based on how they react with water. Over the weekend I did a few experiments on my own. I left some crystals out in the sun and I kept adding water to some of our class crystals from last week, After sharing these results with the class, I told them what the crystals were used for...SOIL MOIST! A polymer used to help those people who forget to water their plants. The crystals absorb the water and then slowly release the water as the soil dried up. After that, we did a quick review of the steps of the scientific method and took notes in our notebooks on page 8. AS this should be a review for all of us, we went through the steps very quickly and did dome practice identifying purpose, independent and dependent variable, control and experimental groups and constants. We did 2 practice cases as a class using advertisements from television and then the kids did their own using advertisements from a magazine. Here is the powerpoint from today. Homework tonight, if you did not already finish it is to complete the Bart Simpson handout, If you lost your copy, here it is.
We took a quick quiz today, 10 questions, on mass and volume. We will start to take quizzes more frequently in the next week or so. With us being back on the A day and B day schedule I think it is important to consistently review your notes every night and be assessed on the material so you don't forget it. Quiz grades should be in powerschools by the weekend. If you so not know your powerschools log in information, please see Mrs. Barber as soon as possible.
In our notebooks today, we also reviewed the concept of observations vs inferences, and qualitative vs. quantitative observations. We utilized "crystals " in an activity today to practice making qualitative and quantitative observations. Seethe pictures below of the crystal activity. Here is our PowerPoint and notes from today. Homework...attach a picture/photo of anything to a blank sheet of paper. Make 10 qualitative and 10 quantitative observations about your photo. This is due Tuesday (A day) and Wednesday (B day). Have a great long weekend. Today we practiced our calculating mass skills by doing a fun lab an calculating the % of sugar that is found in gum. If you did not finish the conclusion questions today, here are the conclusion questions. These questions should be on the back of page 5 1.Why did we have to weigh the gum wrapper both times? 2.Why do we take multiple trials and calculate the average in an experiment? 3.If we contacted Double Bubble and they said our results are incorrect, what might have caused some errors in the experiment results? 4.How could we have improved this experiment? 5.If you had to design an experiment using gum, what would your experiment test? We also organized our notebooks today Here is a list of where everything should go in your notebooks. •Tape the green brochure on the back of page 1 •Tape your textbook scavenger hunt on the front of page 2 •All About Me A-Z…back of page 2 •Tape Mass notes to the front of page 3 •Tape Volume Notes on page 4 •Tape Color Challenge to the back of page 4 Reminder QUIZ on Thursday and Friday on mass and volume.
•Know the units, instrument and definition •Make sure you can read a balance and graduated cylinder Today we introduced out warm up folders which will be used every day in class. When the students come in the folders will be on their desks and there will always be a question/questions on the board for them to answer. Next we reviewed mass from last class. We weighed 10 cubes with identical volumes last class, and today based on the masses of the cubes we identified the materials they were made out of. We introduced volume next. Taking a few notes and jumping right into practicing measuring volume. Please have your materials by Tuesday/Wednesday!!
Today we finished our textbook After that we introduced the Metric System and the importance of scientists using the same form of measurement. In 1995, NASA lost a Mars prob because they were using different forms of measurements. We read the article, Mars Probe lost Due to Simple Math Error and identified the cause of the problem.
Next we introduced MASS by taking a few notes in our notebooks on page 3. We then practiced using the balances by taking the mass of several objects we will use during the year, and by also measuring the mass of 10 different cubes. Friday and Monday we will begin doing volume. If you have not returned your green sheet, I need it back filled in by your parents There is a copy of the green sheet on the website for Monday August 24th. Also, please get your materials together, thank you so much for those kids who have already got their 5 subject notebook. Here is the Mass PowerPoint from today. Welcome back to the first days of school! I am very excited about the new school year. I use this website to post what we do in class everyday, I add handouts and the powerpoints we use in class. If you ever lose a handout, you can come to this website to print out another copy, since I do not give extra copies of assignments, If you are absent one day, you can look at this website to find the notes you have missed and get them in your notebook so you are not behind when you come back to class. Here is a copy of the green parent brochure that went out today, please have your parents sign the back and return it on Wednesday/Thursday. We are TEAM HORNETS. Here is a list of all of your teachers and their email addresses.
